Shadow "Knitter" Scarf

This is one of the reasons I was in Ames, Iowa over the weekend. I taught this scarf project to teach the concept of Shadow/Illusion knitting. The technique seems to originate from a Japanese knitting book, but has become popular in this country due to Vivian Hoxbro's book, Shadow Knitting, and patterns of Maureen Mason-Jamieson. www.kinverknits.cjb.net Patterns have also been in Knitters and InKnitters magazines. By alternating stockinette stitch and garter stitch in each color, one of the colors will dominate when looking at it from an angle. Looking straight on, the pattern looks like it is just striped.

The other reason I was in Ames is to attend Arnhild Hillesland's knitting camp. She holds it every February in the Gateway Hotel in Ames. The classes are good, accomodations good, food is good, and the people are great. Check it out at www.arnhild.com And, of course, Arnhild has her yarn shop open!

Saturday Sky February 24, 2007

The grey sky behind the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames, Iowa. At this time, it was raining! Rained all day Saturday, turning into ice, then about 8 inches of snow before stopping late Sunday afternoon. I was there for Arnhild's Knitting Camp and stayed an extra night because of the bad roads. When we were supposed to leave on Sunday they weren't allowing tow trucks on the freeway. Coming home Monday the roads were fine and counted 25 vehicles in the ditch in the first 30 miles!

Shepherd's Choice

Today I visited Shepherd's Choice with a friend. The shop is on the farm which has sheep and 2 llamas. Most of the yarn they have come from their own flock of sheep and is hand dyed in their dye house. In addition to yarn they carry the basic knitting supplies and some books. Their business originated with handmade natural personal care products like soaps, moisturizers, lip balm, and other bath products. Walking into the shop is a fragrant encounter. I did not buy anything! Because their yarn is hand dyed they do not have many skeins of the same color, so is best for small projects.

After sending two sweaters to Frogtown, I've taken this project out of hibernation. I started this probably about a year ago but other projects kept getting in the way of finishing.

Going to Frogtown

After debating for some time, I decided both these sweaters are going to Frogtown! In the decision making process I learned I am a process knitter rather than a product knitter. I love to start something, but when I've gone far enough to see what it looks like, I get bored, so completing a big project like a sweater gets to be a chore, or it doesn't get done.
The Taos Pinwheel Sweater was started because I was intrigued by the construction method. I knew when I started it wasn't written in a size big enough for me, but had to try it. After I posted the original picture of the progress, I received a comment on this blog from someone from the yarn company stating a larger version would be out soon. When it finally did come out, it was for a drop shoulder sweater rather than the raglan. The answer I received when I e-mailed them said they tried and tried to adapt the small Japanese raglan sweater to a larger size but were unable to do so. The drop shoulder sweater looked like it had such big shoulders I decided I didn't need that look. I knew how the sweater was made so I had answered my question.
The blue sweater is a pattern from InKnitters I started over a year ago from a new cotton yarn made in Croatia. Since I was going to Croatia I thought it would be fun to knit from this yarn. Well, it just never got beyond the armholes and I lost interest and other projects interferred so I never got back to it. Whenever I looked at it, I just put it back in the bag, so decided I evidently didn't want to make it. When I took it off the needles I discovered it was probably 6 inches too big anyway. I found a good way to frog it. Since I had only a small amount of yarn on the ball I was using, I started at the loose end, attached it to my ball winder and just wound until the sweater was gone.
My husband is gone for about a week and a half (enjoying himself in New Orleans at Mardi Gras-I've been 3 times and wasn't interested in going again) so I'm having a mini vacation, too, so today I started a sweater with the yarn I bought in October in New Brunswick. Two UFO's off the list, replaced with only 1-so far!

Fiber Trends Playful Penguins

Isn't he cute? He does have eyes, but they are black and brown and don't show up very well.
Pattern:Fiber Trends Playful Penguins.
Yarn: Ella Mae. The fur is Eskimo
Needles: Size 11, 16"circular and a set of double pointed needles.

This is a good pattern to practise intarsia. The triangular base is knit, then stitches are picked up with black on one edge, the base stitches are continued in white, and with black, stitches are picked up on the other edge. It is knit back and forth, black, white, black while doing the shaping. It is joined at the neck and the head is knit circularly. The wings are each knit in one black and one white piece and the beak and feet knit. Finishing almost took longer than the knitting, sewing the two wing pieces together, the beak and feet stitched together and all pieces sewed on before felting.

Another Book with Knitting Subject Matter

Barbara Delinsky's latest books are some of my favorites, so I buy the new ones as soon as they are available and usually read them very soon. (Unlike knitting, I only read one book at a time!) This one surprised me when it had a lot of knitting references. The story is about a woman who marries into an old New England family and is about to have her first baby. When the baby is born, it has very noticeable African American traits, causing conflict in her marriage and with her in-laws. The only way to solve the problem is to delve into family history. Knitting is important in the life of the woman as she grew up with her grandmother who owns a yarn shop.

A quote from the book as Dana is grabbing her things to go to the hospital to deliver the baby and she took her knitting and some hand knit clothes for the baby rather than the purchased layette from Neiman Marcus from her in-laws. "To explain would have offended them. Hand-knit to her meant memories of her mother, the love of her grandmother, and the caring of a surrogate family of yarn-store friends."

Spring Blossoms Shawl

Pattern: Spring Blossoms Shawl by Eugen K. Beugler by Fiber Trends.
Yarn: Gems by Pearl distributed by Louet. 100% merino.
Needles: Size 4. I almost wish I'd gone up to a 5. In the picture I am in the process of transferring it from a 15" circular to a 32" circular.

The actual shawl is much prettier than the picture looks like it should be. It will really be beautiful when it is blocked. Lace never shows its beauty until it is blocked. It is such fun to stretch it out to actually see what it looks like.

Saturday Sky February 3, 2007

The beautiful, blue sky is deceptive! Our thermometer showed -11 when we got up this morning, never got above zero and at 6 PM is -6 with a vicious wind all day with wind chills about -30 degrees!
